Action
1. Opportunity to act. When it is your turn to act, the action is said to be
on you.
2. Betting activity. There is said to be a lot of action when there have been
numerous bets and raises.
American Airlines
A pair of Aces.
Ante
A small bet all players are required to make before a hand is dealt. Usually
used in Stud games and the latter stages of No Limit HoldÕem tournaments.
All-In
To bet all the money you have on the table.
Backdoor
Catching both the turn and river card to make your hand. For instance, if the
turn and river cards are both spades and make you a spade flush you have made
a backdoor flush.
Bad Beat
A hand that is a big favourite to win, beaten by a hand that was very unlikely
to win.
BankrolL
Current total gambling funds available. Often shortened to roll.
Belly Buster
An inside straight draw. Same as a gutshot.
BeT
To make a wager in accordance with the rules of the game.
Bicycle
The best possible low hand, A-2-3-4-5. Also called a wheel.
Big Blind
The larger of the two blinds, typically used in a Hold'em or Omaha game.
Big Slick
A nickname for Ace-King.
Blank
A board card that doesn't seem to affect the standings in the hand.
Blind
A forced bet (or partial bet) put in by one or more players before any cards
are dealt. Typically, blinds are put in by players immediately to the left of
the button.
Bluff
A Bet or Raise made with a poor hand in the hope that the opposition will fold.
Board
1. The community cards in holdÕem or omaha.
2. The up-cards in stud games.
Boat
Short for a full boat which is slang for a full house.
Bottom Pair
A pair with the lowest card on the flop.
Broadway
The top straight, 10-J-Q-K-A.
Bubble
The point in a tournament where only one more player has to be eliminated before
the prize paying positions.
Bullet (s)
An Ace or a pair of Aces.
Bump
Slang for Raise.
Burn
To discard the top card from the deck, face down. This is done between each betting
round before putting out the next community card(s). It is security against any
player recognizing or glimpsing the next card to be used.
Button
A white acrylic disk that indicates the (nominal) dealer. Also used to refer
to the player on the button.
Buy-In
The amount of money used to join a game or tournament.
Call
To put into the pot an amount of money equal to the most recent bet or raise.
Calling Station
A weak-passive player who calls a lot, but doesn't raise or fold much.
Cap
To put in the last raise permitted on a betting round. This is typically the
third or fourth raise.
Case
The last card of a certain rank in the deck.
Change GearS
Changing your style of play during a game.
Chase
To continue in a hand, often at poor odds, when you really should fold.
Check
1. To not bet, with the option to call or raise later in the betting round.
2. Another word for chip, as in poker chip.
Check-Raise
To check and then raise when a player behind you bets.
Chip
A round token used in place of cash at a gaming table.
Cold Call
To call more than one bet in a single action. For instance, suppose the first
player to act after the big blind raises. Now any player acting after that must
call two bets "cold."
This is different from calling a single bet and then calling
a subsequent raise.
Come Hand
A hand that is not yet made, such as four cards to a flush.
Community Cards
Cards that are available for every player to use in making a hand.
Connectors
A Hold'em starting hand in which the two cards are one apart in rank. E.g. 7-6.
Counterfeit
A term generally used in Omaha Hi-Lo when the low community cards match the low
cards in your hand, therefore making it more difficult to make a low.
Cowboy
A King.
Crack
To beat a big hand. E.g. "I cracked his Aces".
Crying Call
A call that you make expecting to lose, but feel that you must make anyway because
of the pot odds.
Cut-Off
The position (or player) who acts one before the button.
