Balancing
and Collapsing Tables
Because larger tournaments have more than one table, the number of players at
each table will change as the tournament progresses and players are eliminated.
For the game to be fair the number of players at each table should be the same.
Therefore players are moved in an attempt to keep all the tables equally populated.
Balancing is the practice of moving players
from full tables to less full tables when the difference is
2 or more players.
Collapsing tables is the practice of removing
tables once there are enough empty spaces among the rest of
the tables to do so. Thus with 10 player tables, when there
are 10 empty spaces the players from one table are moved to
empty spaces on other tables and their original table is taken
out of play.
Satellites
and Super Satellites
Satellites and Super Satellites (Satellites
are usually one table and Super Satellites are multi table)
are smaller tournaments in which the prize is an entry into
a larger tournament. Satellites and Super Satellites are an
inexpensive way to win an entry into a tournament with a high
Buy-In.
An example of how a satellite would work: The Buy-In for the main tournament
is $1,000 + $100. The Buy-In for the satellite is $110 + $10. If there are 10
entrants (into the satellite) first place will win an entry into the main tournament.
If there are 20 entrants then the top two finishers would win an entry into the
main tournament. If there are 24 entrants then the top two players would win
an entry into the main tournament and third place would pay $440.
Freerolls
There is another type of tournament, a “Freeroll” in
which entry is completely free. There is no Buy-In and no entry fee, but there
are cash prizes available to win.
